Penitential Stanzas (Tone 4)

Gerald Largent

Lord, I want to wash away the record of my sins with tears, and through the rest of my life please You with repentance. But the Enemy deceives me and fights against my soul. Lord, before I perish utterly, save me!

If one takes refuge from the tempest in this harbor, will one not be saved? If in agony one kneels before this house of healing, will not one be cured? Maker-of-All and Physician of the Sick: Lord, before I perish utterly, save me (Colossians 2:14)!

Savior, wash me with my tears, for I am defiled by many sins. Therefore, I fall down before You: I have sinned, have mercy on me, O God!

I am a sheep in Your rational flock, and I flee to You for refuge, Good Shepherd. O God, I have gone astray: Seek me and have mercy on me (John 10:11).

Words from the Saints -- February 23, 2023

Gerald Largent

"All men are made in God's image; but to be in His likeness is granted only to those who through great love have brought their own freedom into subjection to God. For only when we do not belong to ourselves do we become like Him who through love has reconciled us to Himself. No one achieves this unless he persuades his soul not to be distracted by the false glitter of this life." --St. Diadochos of Photiki

"Humility consists, not in condemning our conscience, but in recognizing God's grace and compassion." --St. Mark the Ascetic

"Virtue is nothing without the trial of temptation, for there is no conflict without an enemy, no victory without strife." --St. Leo the Great

"Obedience to the commandments is the resurrection of the dead, for by nature life follows upon virtue." --St. Thalassios the Libyan

"If you have faith in the Lord you will fear punishment, and this fear will lead you to control the passions. Once you control the passions you will accept affliction patiently, and through such acceptance you will acquire hope in God. Hope in God separates the intellect from every worldly attachment, and when the intellect is detached in this way it will acquire love for God." --St. Maximos the Confessor

Words from the Saints -- February 16, 2023

Gerald Largent

"Fire and water do not mix; neither can you mix judgment of others with the desire to repent." --St. John Climacus

"When Scripture says 'He will reward every man according to his works' (Matthew 16:27), do not imagine that works in themselves merit either hell or the Kingdom. On the contrary, Christ rewards each man according to whether his works are done with faith or without faith in Himself; and He is not a dealer bound by contract, but God our Creator and Redeemer." --St. Mark the Ascetic

"Cleanse your vessel, that you may receive grace more abundantly. For though remission of sins is given equally to all, the communion of the Holy Spirit is bestowed in proportion to each man's faith. If you have labored little, you receive little; but if you have wrought much, the reward is great." --St. Cyril of Jerusalem

"No passion is worse than an uncontrolled tongue, because it is the mother of all the passions." --St. Agathon

"All novelty (innovation) in faith is a sure mark of heresy." --St. Vincent of Lerins

"Every evil is a sickness of soul, but virtue offers the cause of its health." --St. Basil the Great

"The man ensnared by pride will need God's help, since man is of no use to him." --St. John Climacus

"Do not listen to talk about other people's sins. For through such listening the form of these sins is imprinted on you." --St. Mark the Ascetic

"Love, unchangeable tranquility and our adoption as children of God are different from each other only in name. As light, fire and flame are present in the selfsame operation, so are these three manifestations of the Spirit. When someone is completely permeated with the love of God, the brightness of his soul is reflected by his whole personality as if in a mirror. Therefore the one who loves God also loves his brother or sister. Indeed, the second love is the proof of the first." --St. John Climacus

"Seek to learn on earth those truths which will remain ever valid in Heaven." --St. Jerome

"A son of God is a person who through wisdom, power and righteousness has become like God." --St. Thalassios the Libyan

"Love sinners, but hate their works, and do not despise them for their faults, lest you be tempted by the same. Remember that you share the earthly nature of Adam and that you are clothed with his infirmity." --St. Isaac the Syrian
